About Us
Mission
Shelter Network is committed to providing housing and support services that create opportunities for homeless families and individuals to re-establish self-sufficiency and to return to permanent homes of their own.
History
Shelter Network was founded in 1987 to provide a comprehensive network of housing and social services for homeless residents of the San Francisco Peninsula. Initiated by a broad-based community response to the plight of homeless families and single adults, Shelter Network has become a model of community involvement. With the support of the private individuals, corporations, foundations, public partners, and nonprofit collaborators, Shelter Network provides comprehensive services to effectively break the cycle of homelessness for thousands of families and individuals.
Growth
Shelter Network opened with an annual budget of $150,000, two paid staff, a core of dedicated volunteers and community supporters, and a vision of starting the first housing program to help homeless families in San Mateo County. Currently, Shelter Network operates six housing facilities with an $8 million budget, more than 80 full-time staff, and thousands of volunteers. Since our founding, we have become the Peninsula's largest provider of housing and support for homeless families and individuals.
Serving Our Community
In fiscal year 2010-2011, Shelter Network served 4,658 people, including 1,655 children. Over 90% of families graduating from our transitional shelters secured and maintained permanent housing.
Budget
Shelter Network's annual operating budget is approximately $8 million. Forty percent of our budget stems from private sources (individuals, foundations, corporations) and sixty percent comes from public grants. Over 80% of Shelter Network's revenue goes toward direct client services.
